Old school P.E.
This is truly amazing. The following excerpt is from a physical education lecture given to a group of teachers in Ohio. The amazing thing about the lecture is that it was given in 1855! What is even more amazing is that the information presented is just as relevant today as it was back then. This information is certainly not outdated because it is old. This couldn’t be further from the truth as our society slowly slips into obesity oblivion; it is plainly obvious that all the new high tech fancy training gadgets are not working as well as most experts will make you believe. I think the premise of the lecture is clear, we need to move, move a lot and move in whole bunch of different ways, as much as possible. Enjoy
“The best sports for children are those active exercises that send new and pure gushes of blood through the veins and restore the jaded body with fresh jets of electric energy. The open air, the run, the jump, the halloo, the scuffle, the contest for speed and strength, seem as natural to children as water to fishes, or air to birds. The noise of a Neighboring school yard is often as annoying to residents nearby, but to one who remembers his youth, and loves to see the lambs and claves frisk in the fields, and the birds dart from tree to tree, and from bush to bush, singing and flying, flying and singing, it is a very much more agreeable sight to witness the active and wide-awake crowd, running, jumping, rolling, wrestling, laughing, frolicking, than to see Dr. Blimber and his melancholy pupils walking out to take the fresh air in solemn procession, two in two with a teacher before and teacher behind as if they were going to the grave to bury some friend. “

Calisthenics Rant!
From Wikipedia: CALISTHENICS are a form of dynamic exercise consisting of a variety of simple, often rhythmical, movements, generally using minimal equipment or apparatus. They are intended to increase body strength and flexibility with movements such as bending, jumping, swinging, twisting or kicking, using only one's body weight for resistance. They are usually conducted in concert with stretches.
Calisthenics when performed vigorously and with variety can benefit both muscular and cardiovascular fitness, in addition to improving psychomotor skills such as balance, agility and coordination.
People need more of the above and to get off the machines that do all the work for you. Get on your feet and work hard to the point you have to rest to catch your breath or because your muscles burn. Rest repeat over and over. The more sedentary your life is outside of the gym, the harder you must work to stay strong in the gym. Running a 5k or 30 min on the eliptical, flag football game or pick-up hoops is not strength training and does not take your muscles and joints through their full range of motion and provide a stimulus to make them stronger. If you want to run fast, be fit, be a better athletes for your sport, have a healthy heart and age gracefully you must train your muscles/body hard to get stronger. The harder your msucles contract the more blood they have to pump through the body and the harder your heart has to work. This is why strength training is better for your heart than cardio! And dont worry ladies you wont build bulky muscles by strength training, its takes certain genetics, special training and diet to get bulky muscles. You will be strong, lean and move very very well. Also remember strength training in not weight training, you dont even need weights to get stronger. Many bodyweight exercises done right and taught the right way by someone who knows what the hell they are doing can provide plenty of resistance your body will need to get stronger. Squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, mountain climbers, hopping, skipping jumping. twisting reaching and turning while balancing in different positions, hanging from a pull-up bar as long as you can, supermans, bridges and crawls. I could on and on. Those above exercises could give someone lifetime of training variation. Oh yeah training is not always fun. It sucks getting up at 5 am or working out after work but it is a must. It will suck much worse to develop diabtes, heart disease or obesity.
